Feb. 19,2007 For my 36th birthday 2-16 a couple friends gifted me with a beautiful male betta. I now need to learn all about bettas! I have the 3 gallon tank in my bedroom which hopefully will be perfect for him. I need to check temperature and water quality before moving him. How exciting!! Much to learn!

Feb. 23, 2007 Changed part of the betta water in vase. Tap water 2.5 gallons 1/4 tsp. stress coat & 1/2 tbsp. aquarium salt. Changed 2/3 water out of Eclipse 3 removed filter/pump combination. Fed betta a couple live tubifex worms. Unfortunately he also ate the duckweed. That may be a problem later. hm... Cleaned & changed water out of H's Eclipse 5 with same water combination as above. Cleaned and changed filter media and water out of both frog tanks. Added water to outdoor water garden. Haven't seen any goldfish in a while. I want new plants for the garden later this year.

Feb. 25, 2007 Hatter is blowing bubbles! I'm afraid though every time he sees me he thinks I'm feeding him. He's very pretty. I still need to move him to a larger tank eventually.

Mar. 2, 2007 Changed 1/2 of betta water in vase same as above except I removed him and cleaned his marbles. He had made a lovely bubble nest prior to my changing water. He was very agitated when I showed him off to the parrotlet. He flashed us some serious finnage!

Mar. 7. 2007 I did a mini photo shoot with Hatter with a mirror behind him part of the time.  I wanted to show off his bubble nest he made for me and his finnage!

Mar. 8, 2007 I destroyed his bubble nest in cleaning and changing Hatter's water with the above mix from last week.

Mar. 12, 2007 Hatter's working on another bubble nest of love for me. We lost a frog on Friday evening. He had a really bad wound on his back and seemed unable to get himself to the top of the tank for air. He went to froggie freezer heaven; he'd been a good froggie companion for 4 or 5 years. We still have three frogs. The solo boy in the massage room was singing to me yesterday. The girl ADF [African Dwarf Frog] in the kitchen is heavy round with eggs.

Apr. 18, 2007 I'm transitioning Hatter into his new home!! He's currently busily trying to escape the plastic bag transitioning station and set himself loose in the tank.

Jan 2008 Last year was a rough pet year for us - we lost Oatmeal [our tabby cat], BeBe [our parakeet], one frog [in my home office], and Hatter [my betta.] As much as I love our animal companions their loss is tough. I still get very choked up when I think of Oatie and BeBe. The two uninhabited fish tanks have been cleaned and sitting alone in their respective rooms. I've pondered what to do... retire the tanks, get new critters, etc...

Speaking of critters, the frogs in the tank in the kitchen area were doing it last night and the tank is covered in eggs. heh. Digit, our parrotlet, is doing well - making new songs and noises and attacking the evil knitting needles than rival for attention with his people. Rufus, our tuxedo kitty, has made it known he likes warm fires in the fireplace, rough love with his dog [my chocolate lab], and soft pillows. Bella is showing her age at times and others is quite bouncy. Today she went through two trash cans making the biggest possible mess with the least amount of paper & trash. sigh. She's crashed out currently with her stuffed pony.

I made a decision about the tanks - I got four very small adult guppies for the massage room. They're cracking me up! Two fancy boys and two girls. They weren't even out of the bag a minute and the boys were flashing the girls their fancy tails. Today was my first day working with them in the room. They're very active fish and there's lots of exploring and courtship going on. My adopted grandfather [who I loved] kept guppies. It's nice thinking of him. The one painting of his that I have is in that room too.

Oh, and I bought one otocinclus [midget sucker catfish] for the tank in bedroom and he's busy eating algae. I also ordered cherry shrimp. They should arrive this week [with hot packs so it's not too cold for them.] http://www.petshrimp.com/ for pictures.

Feb. 24, 2008 Our guppies had babies! Maybe a dozen or so.

Jan. 2, 2010 The guppies are doing fabulous! Many many generations later. The tank set up has all changed. Last summer raccoons killed everyone and everything in my outdoor  water garden. I'm uncertain how to proceed at this point. I'm probably going to get a new ADF for the tank in the kitchen as we lost one last year. The remaining ADF certainly needs a friend. The tetras, frog, and shrimp all seem to do really well together. I can't seem to keep any shrimp happy in any of the other tanks. Things are always evolving and I'm always learning. I've simplified my cleaning process with all my tools in a tub, I condition the water, scrap, vacuum, replace water, etc. and it takes less than a hour to do all three tanks. Ruby is pictured to the right with a cherry shrimp.

Jan. 12, 2010 I acquired another ADF today and added him to the kitchen tank. Hopefully Sam is a boy and hopefully he'll sing and snuggle with Ruby! Sam pictured to the left getting ready to adjust to the tank in his baggie from the pet store.  The last picture shows Ruby and Sam but it's not very clear. Sorry.

5-10-2010 Ruby died shortly after we added Sam. Odd omen if you know the TV show. Sam kills Ruby in the show. hm. At any rate she was a very old frog her eyes were all cloudy and she seemed to just have died of old age. A few weeks back, I got Sam a new friend and they seem to be getting on fine.
