7-31-02 Our tadpole is huge compared to his beginnings. His head/body is 1/4", tail 3/8", and total length 5/8". He swims actively and hunts mostly at the bottom of the tank. - L
8-10-02 Our little tadpole has legs!!! I guess we missed the leg bumps and now he has legs!!! We'd like to introduce some new foods to him and see how if we can diversify his meals. - L
8-11-02 Due to change in H's work situation, Tank D has been brought home. Jack, Chrissy & Janet [the three ADF's] are doing well. - L
8-14-02 We noticed several tadpoles in Tank A swimming actively and
hopefully avoiding getting munched by their parents. I fed our growing tadpole
"Pat" rinsed thawed frozen brine shrimp. Pat seemed to immediately get busy
eating. -L
8-16-02 Tank D's ADF's have successfully snuggled. She laid several eggs in the java moss. - H
8-25-02 Several tank changes have occurred. We added java moss from tank D to Tank A, B, and E. George & Jim keep up a regular routine of snuggling a couple times a week. They were moved out of the kitchen in L's bedroom. Tank E with our tadpole, Pat, was filled with spring water and a tank decoration [a large pagoda] was added. We also hooked Tank E up with a "Smallworld" filter and started feeding Pat a dab of gel of water fleas for food. - L
8-26-02 Tank C's female ADF had been looking like she was full of eggs and then my cory catfish disappeared. And the female ADF looked even larger. She has apparently ate the julian cory catfish. The tank was thoroughly cleaned and fresh live worms were added. - L
8-28-02 through 9-3-02 We were on vacation on Salt Spring Island. Friends cared for our animals until our return.
9-4-02 All of our critters survived our vacation except in Tank C. The female ADF died probably trying to digest the cory catfish she ate while the male ADF's romantic embrace didn't likely help that large meal get digested. - L
*Side note: after breeding the female with be extremely still for a while and she's not dead just resting. A dead ADF is pretty obvious; they either sink or they float. This photo is a bit disturbing but accurately pictures a bloated dead ADF from the allaboutfrogs.org web site. Click here to see.
There are more tadpoles in Tank A. They seem to disappear after a while; they probably get eaten or perish. We're thinking after Pat grows up a bit maybe we'll rescue more tadpoles and grow some more frogs! - L
